Nigeria Kwara Polytechnic Students Set to Form Off-Campus SUG

As a result of what they termed the inactiveness of the incumbent Student Union leaders of the Kwara State Polytechnic (KwaraPoly), Ilorin, students who stay off campus are now joining forces together to establish off-campus Student Union Government (SUG).
According to them, the off-campus students have been suffering from lack of electricity, potable water and good security of lives and property, with no one to fight for their rights. These have made them come up with the plan.
The off-campus students have fixed their elections the same period as the school's SUG elections. Posters and notices of the new off-campus incoming executives could be seen in and around the school.
Expressing his opinion, Ibrahim Babatunde, a Banking and Finance student said: "I'm so happy about the plan because we the off-campus students have been suffering without the school SUG helping us. Everyday, from 5.00 in the morning, we go about in search of water, without an assurance of seeing water to bathe, we have no light."

Nigeria Student in Custody for Raping Girl in India

A Nigerian, 31 year old Prince John, aka Johnson, has been arrested for allegedly raping a girl in Manipuri, India. The accused apparently was the boyfriend of the victim's aunt.
The Bangalore police arrested him on Sunday and remanded him in 14 days of judicial custody by a local court.
"The accused raped the victim on May 13 in Bangalore. He had threatened her with dire consequences if she went to the police.
Later, the victim fled to Mumbai and lodged a complaint with the police there.
The case was transferred to us and we arrested Prince John," said Bangalore rural superintendent of police D. Prakash.
According to the police, Prince John, who is in Bangalore on a student visit, befriended the victim's aunt a few months ago.
On May 13, the victim and her aunt visited Prince John at his residence.
"Subsequently, he told his girlfriend (victim's aunt) that he would take her (victim) for an introduction to a friend, who would help her solve a personal crisis. He took the unsuspecting victim to a house where he raped and threatened her," the police added.
The victim is now undergoing treatment at a hospital in Mumbai. The incident has caused unrest among the North East student community

Vigilance group kills UI student

A 200-level student of the University of Ibadan (UI), Taki Mayowa Peter, died at the University Teaching Hospital (UCH), on Sunday, as a result of injury sustained when he was shot by a member of a vigilance group in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The two members of the group at Irepodun area of Agbowo are now cooling off at the Agbowo police station for killing the student of the Department of Anthro-pology and Archaeology at the late hours of Friday.

Before  his death, 26-year-old Taki was said to be returning with his classmate, Wale Olowoniyi, from a six-day vigil at about 4.55 a.m, when they met two member of a vigilance group, who laid siege in front of their house at 2, Jakan Street, Agbowo Express Road.

According to Olowoniyi they had left the church by 5.55 a.m when they met one Badru and James, the two member of the vigilance group, who accosted and asked them where they were coming from.

Olowoniyi, who escaped the gunshots by whiskers, said the night guard insisted they must be flogged, even after they had informed them that they were coming from a vigil.

Unable to bear the pains inflicted on them through wipping by the guard, Olowoniyi said Taki took to his heels, but he was fired at by James.

It was learnt that the sound of the gunshot attracted the police to the scene of the incident as they took Taki to a nearby hospital.

When the Nigerian Tribune visited the Irepo-dun police station, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and the Divisional Commanding Officer (DCO) were not available to confirm the incident.

Police fire tear gas to disperse student protesters

The tear gas caused protesters to temporarily retreat, but a couple of thousand were gathered near the gate at the former University of Lagos later in the morning as hundreds of police officers looked on.
Lagos Deputy Police Commissioner Tunde Sobulo confirmed tear gas had been fired, saying “students were trying to overwhelm (policemen).” He said officers responded with tear gas to disperse the protesters.
Joshua Olawale, a student representative, said police had sought to prevent the protesters from straying beyond the area of the campus.
“This has been a peaceful protest, but the police are making it as if it is a war situation,” he said.
“They fired tear gas and injured four of our colleagues who are now on admission in the medical centre in the university.”
Witnesses said protesters had thrown stones and other debris at police vehicles.
Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan announced Tuesday that the University of Lagos, also known as UNILAG, would be renamed Moshood Abiola University.
The name change is meant to honour Abiola, a businessman and politician widely believed to have won 1993 presidential elections, but who saw the result annulled by military ruler Ibrahim Babangida.
Abiola was jailed after declaring himself president and died in custody in 1998.
Students say the name change will harm the university, which is known across Africa’s most populous nation and has a strong academic reputation.
On Wednesday, protesting students blocked a major bridge in Lagos, Nigeria’s economic capital of some 15 million people
